As parents and guardians of students enrolled at PS/IS 187, we are automatically members of the Parent-Teacher Organization. Welcome!
Purpose & Role of the Parent-Teacher Organization
We partner with the school’s administration and other members of the school community to enrich the education and life of all children at PS/IS187, and to provide a forum through which parents can become more involved in the education of their children. We also
PTO General Meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of every month, preceded by an Executive Board meeting and a meeting with the school’s administration. Committees & the Executive Board of the Parent-Teacher Organization meet on the 1st Monday of every month. ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO ALL PARENTS – everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.
Below are the many ways the PTO reaches out to ensure regular contact and dissemination of information. The PTA President and Officers are also available to offer assistance (see the Contact page).
School Leadership Team (SLT)
2016-2017 SLT Parent Members: Leanne Gonzalez-Singer, Joe Biehl, Sarah Kim
PTO President: Gerry Goss
Administration & Faculty Members: Cynthia Chory, Bianka Crespo, Chris Jennings, Casey Melilli, Jessica Mitchell, Marissa DeFranca
SLT meetings are held once a month on a Wednesday morning from 7:00am-8:15am in the Library.
The School Leadership Team (SLT) is comprised of an equal number of parents (elected by the PTO) and faculty members, the PTO President, and Principal Chory. One of the faculty members is the UFT (United Federation of Teachers) representative.
The primary charge of the SLT is to write the Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP) and to align the school’s budget, so the school can meet the goals within the CEP. Every public school in NYC must have a CEP and an SLT. SLTs make decisions by consensus. Some schools struggle with that, but we must say, we are doing well! Meetings are public and open to all parents, and although only members of the SLT may speak during meetings, outside comments may be raised by proxy. To learn more about SLT go HERE.

Friends of 187
Friends of 187 is a non-profit organization (501c3), separate from the PTA, that raises funds for enrichment programming within the school day in the arts, literacy and foreign language. It was formed by PS/IS 187 parents in 2008.
Friends of 187 works closely with the administration, School Leadership Team and teachers to identify and successfully integrate this programming within the curriculum. Currently, Friends of 187 funding supports programs such as:
* Artist-In-The-Schools programs in music, drama and
* Teachers in Art, Music and Spanish
* Teachers & Writers Collaborative
* Digital Media
Go to Programs Funded to find a full list of programs funded during the current school year.
Friends of 187 raises money for PS/IS 187 throughout the year through an annual appeal and a winter auction fundraiser. Currently, Friends of 187 raises approximately $140,000 per year, coming primarily from parents and families, family foundations, but also other community support. Donations to Friends of 187 are tax deductible.
With severe budget cuts over a number of years (and loss of Title 1 funding), fundraising through Friends of 187 and the PTA replaces many things once considered “basics” in a NYC public school. While the PTA focuses on immediate classroom material and equipment needs, class trips, professional development and technology, Friends of 187 funds primarily arts and literacy related programs during the regular school day.
