About friends of 187www.friendsof187.org
Friends of 187 is a non-profit organization (501c3), separate from the PTA, that raises funds for enrichment programming within the school day in the arts, literacy and foreign language. It was formed by PS/IS 187 parents in 2008. Friends of 187 works closely with the administration, School Leadership Team and teachers to identify and successfully integrate this programming within the curriculum. Currently, Friends of 187 funding supports programs such as: * Artist-In-The-Schools programs in music, drama and art * Teachers in Art, Music and Spanish * Teachers & Writers Collaborative * Digital Media Go to Programs Funded to find a full list of programs funded during the current school year. Friends of 187 raises money for PS/IS 187 throughout the year through an annual appeal and a winter auction fundraiser. Currently, Friends of 187 raises approximately $140,000 per year, coming primarily from parents and families, family foundations, but also other community support. Donations to Friends of 187 are tax deductible. With severe budget cuts over a number of years (and loss of Title 1 funding), fundraising through Friends of 187 and the PTA replaces many things once considered “basics” in a NYC public school. While the PTA focuses on immediate classroom material and equipment needs, class trips, professional development and technology, Friends of 187 funds primarily arts and literacy related programs during the regular school day.
